Dit stuk-werk vervat de verklaringe van 't gene Mozes verhaalt in 't 22. capittel Genesis: hoe God Abraham verzocht, ende hem beval zijne zone Izaäk te brengen op eenen berg, om aldaar geofferd, tot een Holocaustum, dat is: onthalsd, daarna ontledet[21], ende van zijnen vader Gode geofferd te worden. Onze dichter heeft zijn bedenkinge over zoo grooten geheimenisse, en teekent aan de voornaamste omstandigheden deszelfs: 1. stelt hij voor oogen, de goede onderwijzinge ende opvoedinge van Izaäk, Abrahams genegendheid nevens[22] zoodanigen zone. 2. de verzoekinge van den waren God, de welke de zijne grondeert gantsch op andre wijze, als wel de Satan den Mensche; ende overmits men uit den tekst verstaat, dat de vader was bevolen zijnen zoon te offeren, 's daags te voren, eer hij trok op om Gode te gehoorzamen, zoo vertoont de dichter. 3. de groote aanvechtingen, die Abraham al den nacht in zijn gemoed hadde, in 't overdenken van 't gene hem belast was. Hier over worden dan wijdloopig voorgesteld alle de tegenwerpingen van de natuurlijke hertsneigingen, om Abraham af te keeren van Gods bevel te gehoorzamen; daarbij de verantwoordingen van den Geest Gods in zijn getrouwen dienstknecht, de welke overwinner blijft, besloten hebbende zijnen last te voldoen. 4. beschrijft hij zijn reize naar den berg, de nieuwe aanvechtingen van Abraham en Izaäk, daar na haar[23] beider geloove, ende de gelukkige uitgang van haar[23] vrijwillige gehoorzaamheid, de Heere haar[23] op 't uiterste te kennen gevende, de reste van zijn verborgen wille over zulk een verzoekinge. Sluitelijken, de dichter hebbende Abrahams geloove groot gemaakt, ende 'tzelve tegen-gesteld de wreede en mensch-verdichte Gods-diensten der afgodische heidenen, dewelke hare kinderen den Duivel, ende niet Gode opgeofferd hebben, toont het ware wezen van deze schaduwe, ende de t' samen-stemminge die daar is tusschen Izaäk en Jesum Christum, het Lam Gods, voorgeschikt ten brand-offer tot kwijt-scheldinge onzer zonden.

Heere van Bartas Werken, in 1621, door hem uitgegeven.
[5] Deze, alom beaamde, uitspraak van den tijdgenoot, bewijst op nieuw de juistheid van Starings zeggen, dat "de naneef menig vonnis anders wijst" dan gene.
[6] Wij laten deze navolgingen hier op de beide vorige fabel- en zede-rijmbundeltjens volgen, al werden de Vaderen een paar jaar vóór 't laatste gedrukt, in een door Van Lennep vermelde, afzonderlijke uitgave van 1616.—In 't boek van Heins, door Vondel tevens met een klinkdicht en een vers op zijn afbeelding vereerd (die wij hier beiden laten volgen), zagen zij voor de tweede maal het licht.
